How to Join an Eve Online Corporation

I’ve had quite a few emails from people since I started this blog asking me one question more than most, and that is, “How do I join a corp in Eve online?”

Some players seem to have already had a good go at Eve, but just don’t seem to be able to find players to align themselves with, while other people are just dead keen to jump into a corp right from the start.

So the first thing I want to cover is this — YES, its ok to join a corp when you’re a newb in Eve… in fact, MANY corps PREFER new players, because it means they’re enthusiastic, and it means they haven’t got any preconceptions about how corps work or their role within them.

Forgive the comparison, but new corp members in Eve are a bit like a wet piece of clay… new corps love moulding them into their own instruments of destruction (or construction, as the case may be!).

The second and most obvious thing I’d like to cover is how to join a corp in Eve online.

Step 1 – Don’t be shy. In order for corps to find you, you need to get your name out there. You can do this either by the direct route, which is joining the corp recruiting channel inside the game and actively soliciting corps, or you can do what I did, and just ask a million questions in newbie chat/help channels.

I think new corps can recognize if you’re the kind of player they want simply by reading your questions. Are they intelligent? Are they well thought out? Are the questions related to something their guild is doing? Aka, “What skills should I be working towards to be able to construct a player owned starbase”, or, “Whats the best fit out for a destroyer, long range or short?”.

Manufacturing guilds might pick you up from question a, and PvP/Mission running corps from question b.

By far the best way though to get into a good corp is simply to get into the corp recruitment channel inside Eve and just “lurk” for a while. See who’s offering what, see if the same corp is constantly recruiting, and see if you like the sound of anything you see.

I suggest you give it around 2 days of game play of just watching the channel, and then join up with a corp. Don’t be too picky – what might seem like a dream corp from one recruiters ad may turn out to be a corp full of bickering and backstabbing, and the corp who sounds so-so may actually turn out to be your cup of tea.

Just like the real world, you never know what you’re gonna get in an Eve corp until you join one and see whats on the other side of the curtain. Don’t be shy. Join, join, and then join again until you find a corp.

Best of luck – and feel free to let us know how you go.
